Why is the word *Liberal* currently a dirty word to so many?

I’m very liberal and proud of it, my reactions to the current misunderstanding by so many of the word range from cracking up laughing to sheer frustration. =)

Liberal comes from the Latin liberalis, meaning suitable for a free man/person, doubt anyone could object so far. It is an adjective basically meaning generous, open, unfettered by authoritanism, orthodoxy and tradition. Synonyms include charitable, philanthropic, benevolent, advanced. progressive, open-minded and tolerant. Liberty is the noun basically meaning, independence, emancipation, liberation and autonomy, synonyms include freedom and license.

People vary in the degree to which they are liberal, those with small c conservative/right of centre political beliefs are often pretty liberal but it is true that the further right political belief becomes the more illiberal the person is too. A liberal person can be radical but never reactionary and frightened of change for the common good.
Liberalism dominates centre/left of centre/left politics, but extreme left political beliefs are authoritarian only, very similar to extreme right beliefs in fact.

Liberals are egalitarians who believe in equality, justice, respect for all and that political power should never become a tool to benefit politicians/corporations/an elite at the expense of the majority. Far from inhibiting progress, we ARE the progressives, we want to ensure opportunities are open to all. Liberal thinking is what has led to progress in so many areas of human existence, human rights, freedom of thought and religion, empowerment of ordinary people, better living conditions, science, education, judicial systems, democracy…… I really could go on. So many of the benefits available to us in Western society wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Liberals seeking change from the oppressive systems which were so dominant in the last millenium.
So why is the word *Liberal* currently a dirty word to so many?

Where would anyone get the idea that fascism is a left-wing movement?

The characteristics of fascism are as follows:

- Economic corporatism and elitism. Fascism is rule by, for, and of corporations and the very wealthy.

- Rejection of objective truth and material reality, so as to justify rank distortion of facts and their constant use of the “Big Lie” propaganda technique.

- Conservative or reactionary social policy. As a means of controlling the public, fascists condemn any sort of social progress. In order to cement the belief of a highly stratified society rife with segregated classes, they ostracize any convenient target of prejudice, generally racial or ethnic minorities, religious minorities, homosexuals, etc.

- Pervasive, institutionalized anti-intellectualism. Intellectuals are always the first group to notice distortion of fact, and they’re the most willing to challenge existing norms. As such, fascists are strongly opposed to intellectual and academic pursuits.

- A militaristic foreign policy. As fascism is effectually the takeover of government by corporate interests, such interests generally seek to expand markets and secure resource inputs by way of military aggression. Additionally, fascists seek to wage war so as to justify increasingly arbitrary and dictatorial measures domestically.

- A domestic security state. In addition to the militaristic rationale, fascists are, above all, opposed to REAL individual liberty, which they equate with anarchy. Fascism, by its very nature, is obsessed with controlling literally everything – starting with political dissent, and the personal lives of the citizenry.

These are all fundamentally right-wing characteristics. How on earth could anyone possibly think fascism is a left-wing ideology or paradigm? The mind reels.

Oh, and yes, I am aware that “Nazi” is short for “National Socialist.” As I mentioned above, a hallmark of fascism is extreme dishonest, and pervasive double-think. The American fascist movement that arose in the 1930′s (funded by the same industrialists and financiers who funded Hitler and Mussolini) was entitled the “American Liberty League.” These American fascists weren’t for liberty anymore than the German fascists were for left-wing socialism.

Why must always the best minds and human genius live in extreme poverty and persecution whilst the dummies and most corrupt individuals get always all the power and all the privileges. Most people follow blindly their leaders and rulers, most people know nothing about the truths behind things like the nation-state and class, or the truth about capitalism and patriotism, the people are still very ignorant of reality and life.
This is why we did not have a revolution yet, this why capitalism and the state still thrives on the misery of the masses. But in the coming near future this condition can suddenly change, a leap from quantity to the qualitative. Humanity is going to wake up some day soon and rise in their might against authority and hierarchy and bring the whole system down for ever never to be repeated. This uprising is called the anarchic revolution orchestrated by the people and for the people. All decisions will be made only by us the people and no one else and who refuse to continue and remain eternal slaves of the system and servants to its masters. We are going to become totally free, for the first time in human history, it took a very long time to achieve, so much suffering and misery, so may horrors and tragedies but the end to all this is near. At last the whole people can live in dignity and richness and genuine material peace.

We declare the start of the anarchic revolution as from now, lead and directed solely by us and no one else. We must be careful of enemy penetration from all directions. The first step will be the termination of capitalism and the nation state, the second step we must make sure that we don’t become a pathetic anarchic movement dominated by rubbish people calling themselves with all sorts of anarchism. There is only one kind of anarchy; all the rest is a reactionary attempt to control our half clandestine anarchic movement.

What can you tell me about the National University of Singapore?

I plan on studying abroad there for a year. I have checked out the school’s main website and I have checked out the testimonial’s they put on there but I feel as if I shouldn’t get all my information directly from the school site for discrepancies due to biases in order to get people to attend the school. So I wanted to inquire on here and see if any of my fellow Y!A users can tell me a little more about the university?
In terms of quality of education, student life, student body, and professors how would you rank the school? For example if I was having trouble with a particular topic or subject how open and how relaxed are the professors? Are they open to helping or are they the kind of “get out of my face” type? What about the student body? How diverse is it in terms of nationalities? Is is it really as mixed as the school site makes it seem? Does the school have a welcoming atmospheres? Could an introverted inexperienced in the culture type of person feel at home there?

I just started using ProActiv again because lately the cheaper alternative AcneFree has not been working for me. Usually I just have a pimple or two but lately I’ve been so stressed out and I’ve lost about 15 lbs that I coudn’t afford to lose. My hormones are out of wack and my face is suffering. Help – advertisement websites coming up in Explorer and Firefox constantly, PC-Cillin didn’t help?

I have Windows XP. Regardless of the user, I keep getting websites that are advertisements, whether it is a testimonial via a youtube video, or just a dating website, or WoW gold, whatever, popping up through both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox tab.

I have PC Cillin, and I ran a virus scan, and it picked up a Trojan on the scan. Now, I’m pretty stupid when it comes to computers sometimes, but I’d just assume it deleted it for me. Yet, I still have these stupid advertisement websites coming up.

What should I do? I don’t want to buy any more things that aren’t going to help, is there anything free I can download to fix this? I already went into the task manager and google searched all of the processes running on, and I’m pretty sure they were all safe… I have absolutely no idea what to do now.

Too much Benefiber? Is it even good for you?

Im having a hard time keeping regular. Yesterday I got some Benefiber to help (I hope). My question is;
#1. What if I take too much. Should I start out with half the recommend dose and work my way up?

Help with acne products? answer asap. please

Ok heres the deal. I am 13 and cant stand the pressure of having acne. it hurts thinking nobody looks at me like its me, they look directly at acne and flaws. i am in the middle of a product crisis. My mom reccomended Proactiv but i have heard it does serious damage to your skin because of the harsh mixture of chemicals. Then i looked at Murad Acne Complex and it seemed to look like it would really work ( i have a murad product and it works great). Then i heard about this great stuff called Acnezine and i looked at the testimonials and some Proactiv users have used it and said it was absolutely great!! so im leaning towards acnezine which is a pill i think that you take and it clears acne from the inside out. But, with the acnezine, i dont know how much it is. There is a free two month order but i have to purchase a four month order in order for that to work. but i have no idea how much acnezine is. it is so frustrating and i just want anything to get rid of my pimples. its sad. )= help me please? any ideas? tell me what you think about Proactiv or any other product. just some help is really needed.

i went to my doctor already and he gave me this wash with a really high benzoyl peroxide content and all it did was bleach my face and make my skin red and itchy. it did nothing for me.

How long does it take after quitting from long term marijuana use for your brain to recover?

Mainly looking for testimonials from recovered long term users. I quit about 2 months ago, I feel a lot clearer, but I still feel that my brain has not returned to normal. A friend of mine who quit long ago from heavy use said it takes around 6 months to return fully to normal, he said your memory, focus, motivation, co-ordination etc all comes back but you have to wait a loooong time. I’ve read everything they have to say about it. Naturally I’m a tad bit skeptic, I mean they are trying to sell me a product that teachers you to make good advertisment letters, exactly what they are doing. Maybe they are just good at making it sound right, I’m not sure. (It sounds FREAKING FABULOUS.)

I know I’m a half decent writer, my spelling is not perfect but for that I have dictionary.com and my grammar is pretty decent too. Besides that, I know I love writing. I can’t say it’s a passion, but I do still enjoy it quite a bit.
